Beirut, Greater Beirut. Behind the terse title of this book, to say the least, it is not just a question of the size of the Beirut conurbation. To account for the debates and positions taken - implicit or not - relating to the development of the urbanization of Beirut since the middle of the 19th century, the notion of limit and that of extent have been more strongly mobilized; those of territory and hinterland have also been used. Through the thirteen articles gathered in this book, the authors try to better understand how Beirut, a simple cabotage port with only a few thousand inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, currently groups together more than a million and spans several tens of square kilometres. It is therefore a work in history, but not only. After seventeen years of a war which particularly affected it, the Lebanese capital is being rebuilt. Beyond the urban space, this reconstruction is part of issues that can only be grasped in an analysis of the territories of Beirut and Lebanon which extend from the inner suburbs to the borders of the Syrian plain. If the works of historians constitute the first part of the publication, it is geographers, anthropologists, architects and town planners who have fed the others. Beyond the increase in the volume of knowledge, the fact that the authors are for the most part young researchers - less marked than their elders by the difficulties of carrying out research during the war - also contributes, in its way,

The East in the West reassesses Western views of Asia. Traditionally many European historians and theorists have seen the societies of the East as 'static' or 'backward'. Jack Goody challenges these assumptions, beginning with the notion of a special Western rationality which enabled 'us' and not 'them' to modernise. He then turns to book-keeping, which several social and economic historians have seen as intrinsic to capitalism, arguing that there was in fact little difference between East and West in terms of mercantile activity. Other factors said to inhibit the East's development, such as the family and forms of labour, have also been greatly exaggerated. This Eurocentrism both fails to explain the current achievements of the East, and misunderstands Western history. The East in the West starts to redress the balance, and so marks a fundamental shift in our view of Western and Eastern history and society.

The Cambridge History of Latin America is a large scale, collaborative, multi-volume history of Latin America during the five centuries from the first contacts between Europeans and the native peoples of the Americas in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries to the present. Ideas and Ideologies in Twentieth-Century Latin America brings together chapters from Volumes IV, VI, and IX of The Cambridge History to provide in a single volume the economic, social and political ideologies of Latin America since 1870. This, it is hoped, will be useful for both teachers and students of Latin American history and of contemporary Latin America. Each chapter is accompanied by a bibliographical essay.

In this pithy and highly readable book, Brian Skyrms, a recognised authority on game and decision theory, investigates traditional problems of the social contract in terms of evolutionary dynamics. Game theory is skilfully employed to offer new interpretations of a wide variety of social phenomena, including justice, mutual aid, commitment, convention and meaning. The author eschews any grand, unified theory. Rather, he presents the reader with tools drawn from evolutionary game theory for the purpose of analysing and coming to understand the social contract. The book is not technical and requires no special background knowledge. As such, it could be enjoyed by students and professionals in a wide range of disciplines: political science, philosophy, decision theory, economics and biology.
